Targeting Top American Leaders
NSA whistleblower Russel Tice – a
key source in the 2005 New York Times
report that blew the lid off the Bush administration’s use
of warrantless wiretapping –
told Peter B. Collins on Boiling Frogs Post (the website of
FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds):
Tice: Okay. They
went after–and I know this because I had my hands literally on
the paperwork for these sort of things–they went after
high-ranking military officers; they went after members of
Congress, both Senate and the House, especially on the
intelligence committees and on the armed services committees and
some of the–and judicial.
But they went after other ones, too. They went after
lawyers and law firms. All kinds of–heaps of lawyers and law
firms. They went after judges. One of the judges is now sitting on the Supreme Court
that I had his wiretap information in my hand. Two are former
FISA court judges. They went after
State Department officials. They went after people in
the executive service that were part of the White House–their
own people. They went after antiwar groups. They went
after U.S. international–U.S. companies that that do
international business, you know, business around the world.
They went after U.S. banking firms and financial firms that do
international business. They went after NGOs that–like the Red
Cross, people like that that go overseas and do humanitarian
work. They went after a few antiwar civil rights groups. So, you
know, don’t tell me that there’s no abuse, because I’ve had this
stuff in my hand and looked at it. And in some cases, I
literally was involved in the technology that was going after
this stuff. And you know, when I said to [former MSNBC show host
Keith] Olbermann, I said, my particular thing is high tech and
you know, what’s going on is the other thing, which is the
dragnet. The dragnet is what Mark Klein is talking about, the
terrestrial dragnet. Well my specialty is outer space. I deal
with satellites, and everything that goes in and out of space. I
did my spying via space. So that’s how I found out about this.
Collins: Now Russ, the targeting of the people that you just
mentioned, top military leaders, members of Congress,
intelligence community leaders and the–oh, I’m sorry, it was
intelligence committees, let me correct that–not intelligence
community, and then executive branch appointees. This creates
the basis, and the potential for massive blackmail.
Tice: Absolutely! And remember we talked about that before,
that I was worried that the intelligence community now has sway
over what is going on. Now here’s the big one. I haven’t given
you any names. This was is summer of 2004. One of the papers
that I held in my hand was to wiretap a bunch of numbers
associated with, with a 40-something-year-old wannabe senator
from Illinois. You wouldn’t happen to know where that guy lives
right now, would you? It’s a
big white house in Washington, DC. That’s who they went after.
And that’s the president of the United States now.
[Numerous] FBI officers held a gun to Binney’s head as he
stepped naked from the shower. He watched with his wife and
youngest son as the FBI ransacked their home. Later Binney was
separated from the rest of his family, and FBI officials
pressured him to implicate one of the other complainants in
criminal activity. During the
raid, Binney attempted to report to FBI officials the crimes he
had witnessed at NSA, in particular the NSA’s violation of the
constitutional rights of all Americans. However, the FBI wasn’t
interested in these disclosures. Instead, FBI officials seized
Binney’s private computer, which to this day has not been

Which leads to the question, why would [Obama] do all these
things? Why would he be afraid for example, to take the drones
away from the CIA? Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s
afraid. Number one, he’s afraid of what happened to Martin
Luther King Jr. And I know from a good friend who was there when
it happened, that at a small dinner with progressive supporters
– after these progressive supporters were banging on Obama
before the election, “Why don’t you do the things we thought you
stood for?” Obama turned sharply and said, “Don’t you remember
what happened to Martin Luther King Jr.?” That’s a quote, and
that’s a very revealing quote.
In a speech on March 21, second-term Obama gave us a big clue
regarding his concept of leadership – one that is marked
primarily by political risk-avoidance and a penchant for
“leading from behind”: “Speaking as a politician, I can promise
you this: political leaders will not take risks if the people do
not demand that they do. You must create the change that you
want to see.”
John Kennedy was willing to take huge risks in reaching out
to the USSR and ending the war in Vietnam. That willingness to
take risks may have gotten him assassinated, as James Douglass
argues in his masterful JFK and the Unspeakable.
Martin Luther King, Jr., also took great risks and met the
same end. There is more than just surmise that this weighs
heavily on Barack Obama’s mind.Last year, pressed by progressive donors at a dinner
party to act more like the progressive they thought he was,
Obama responded sharply, “Don’t you remember what happened to

from Alex Jones: Even though we have seen countless instances of
lone gunmen on the street, we have never seen an entire city
locked down as we witnessed last week in Boston and its suburbs.
The very definition of martial law is when due process is
suspended and Americans are under military rule.
Infowars.com has reviewed
hundreds of photos, many sent to us by our listeners, of
militarized police pointing guns at them and treating citizens
like terrorist criminals.
Below are samples of these
images. We also saw a clip on CNN during the prison lock down in
Boston showing a woman in a park playing with her children and a
police helicopter told her to get out of the park.
Related: When history repeats
itself, does anybody notice? This is what
martial law in the US looks like:
Shocking footage has emerged from
Friday’s lockdown in Boston, where police, federal agents,
national guard troops and SWAT teams enforced door to door
searches of everyone’s home within twenty blocks as the entire
city was placed under orders to stay off the streets.
The video, shot by a resident from
their own house across the street, shows police barking orders
at men and women as they order them at gunpoint to identify
themselves, put their hands on their heads, and get out of their
own home. They are then ordered to run down the street to be
further frisked by police as scores of armed militarized cops
The scenes look like something out
of a disaster movie, with the backdrop of suburban America
juxtaposed with what is essentially martial law playing out in
The story floated in the mainstream
media that the door to door searches were conducted with the
voluntary consent of the residents of Watertown is clearly
false. 9000+ Police locked down an entire city and went in with
full force, with armored vehicles and combat gear, all to search
for an injured 19 year old kid who turned out to be cowering in
someone’s back yard.
While armies of police roamed
around people’s homes and private property, Public
transportation was shut down, businesses were forced to close,
and a no-fly zone was enacted over Boston in an unprecedented
show of force.
At this point, as military
helicopters buzzed over neighborhoods, the Fourth Amendment had
ceased to exist in Boston, which quickly resembled a war zone.
The compliant mainstream media
reported on the activity without alarm or question.
Katy Waldman of Slate wrote an article claiming that under
dire circumstances police can suspend 4th Amendment rights
against unreasonable searches:
In exigent circumstances, or
emergency situations, police can conduct warrantless searches to
protect public safety. This exception to the Fourth Amendment’s
probable cause requirement normally addresses situations of “hot
pursuit,” in which an escaping suspect is tracked to a private
home. But it might also apply to the events unfolding in Boston
if further harm or injury might be supposed to occur in the time
it takes to secure a warrant.
This activity, once again, sets a
shocking precedent. Police and military are training in these
circumstances every single day of the year. They are fully
acclimatized to the process, as if it is completely normal. They
do not hesitate in carrying out such orders, which are now being
implemented whenever the authorities deem a situation to be an

On Thursday, as the Senate voted

took to the floor and demonstrated just how clueless he is about
the firearms he wants to criminalize.
“The events of the last few

would have been gunned down but for the fact that the man’s

Senators not allowed to read bill prior to cloture
April 12, 2013
Like the disastrous and
unconstitutional Obamacare bill rammed down the throats of the
American people, the unconstitutional S. 49 gun bill aimed at
the heart of the Second Amendment passed cloture earlier today
in the Senate with 68 votes despite the fact senators have not
had a chance to read it.
Sen. Mike Lee: Nobody has read the bill.
Cloture will now put the
legislation up for a simple majority vote. Democrats have a
majority in the Senate. It will be up to Republicans in the
House to derail the bill if it is passed in the Senate.
Republicans decided not to
support a move by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul to filibuster the
legislation. Sixteen Republicans – Alexander, Ayotte, Burr,
Chambliss, Coburn, Collins, Corker, Flake, Graham, Heller,
Hoeven, Isakson, Kirk, McCain, Toomey, Wicker – voted with
Democrats to move the bill to the floor for debate and a vote.
Regardless of the enthusiasm to

Pinkney puts historic civilian government ammunition purchases
Did you know that there
are thousands upon thousands of homeless people that are living
underground beneath the streets of major U.S. cities? It is
happening in Las Vegas, it is happening in New York City and it
is even happening in Kansas City. As the economy crumbles,
poverty in the United States is
absolutely exploding and so is homelessness. In
addition to the thousands of "tunnel people" living under the
streets of America, there are also thousands that are living in
tent cities, there are tens of thousands that are living in
their vehicles and there are
a million public school children that do not have
a home to go back to at night.
The federal government tells us that the recession "is over" and
that "things are getting better", and yet poverty and
homelessness in this country continue to rise with no end in
sight. So what in the world are things going to look like when
the next economic crisis hits?
When I heard that there
were homeless people living in a network of underground tunnels
beneath the streets of Kansas City, I was absolutely stunned. I
have relatives that live in that area. I never thought of Kansas
City as one of the more troubled cities in the United States.
Daily Mail, police recently discovered a network
of tunnels under the city that people had been living in...

Authorities said these people were living in squalor, with piles
of garbage and dirty diapers left around wooded areas.
The saddest part is the
fact that authorities found dirty diapers in the areas near
these tunnels. That must mean that babies were being raised in
that kind of an environment.
Unfortunately, this kind
of thing is happening all over the nation. In recent years, the
tunnel people of Las Vegas have received quite a bit of
publicity all over the world. It has been estimated that
1,000 people live in the massive network of flood
tunnels under the city...
beneath Vegas’s glittering lights lies a sinister labyrinth
inhabited by poisonous spiders and a man nicknamed The Troll who

astonishingly, the 200 miles of flood tunnels are also home to
1,000 people who eke out a living in the strip’s dark
like Steven and his girlfriend Kathryn, have furnished their
home with considerable care - their 400sq ft 'bungalow' boasts a
double bed, a wardrobe and even a bookshelf.
Could you imagine living
like that? Sadly, for an increasing number of Americans a
"normal lifestyle" is no longer an option. Either they have to
go to the homeless shelters or they have to try to eke out an
existence on their own any way that they can.
In New York City,
authorities are constantly trying to root out the people that
live in the tunnels under the city and yet they never seem to be
able to find them all. The following is from a
Post article about the "Mole People" that live
underneath New York City...
homeless people who live down here are called Mole People. They
do not, as many believe, exist in a separate, organized
underground society. It's more of a solitary existence and
loose-knit community of secretive, hard-luck individuals.
The New York Post
followed one homeless man known as "John Travolta" on a tour
through the underground world. What they discovered was a world
that is very much different from what most New Yorkers
the tunnels, their world is one of malt liquor, tight spaces,
schizophrenic neighbors, hunger and spells of heat and cold.
Travolta and the others eat fairly well, living on a regimented
schedule of restaurant leftovers, dumped each night at different
times around the neighborhood above his foreboding home.
Even as the Dow hits
record high after record high, poverty in New York City
continues to rise at a very frightening pace. Incredibly, the
number of homeless people sleeping in the homeless shelters of
New York City has increased
whopping 19 percent over the past year.
In many of our major
cities, the homeless shelters are already at maximum capacity
and are absolutely packed night after night. Large numbers of
homeless people are often left to fend for themselves.
That is one reason why we
have seen the rise of so many tent cities.
Yes, the tent cities are
still there, they just aren't getting as much attention these
days because they do not fit in with the "economic recovery"
narrative that the mainstream media is currently pushing.
In fact, many of the tent
cities are larger than ever. For example, you can check out a
Reuters video about a growing tent city in New Jersey that was
posted on YouTube at the end of March
here. A lot of these tent cities have now become
permanent fixtures, and unfortunately they will probably become
much larger when the next major economic crisis strikes.
But perhaps the saddest
part of all of this is the massive number of children that are
suffering night after night.
For the first time ever,
a million public school children in the United
States are homeless. That number has risen by
percent since the 2006-2007 school year.
So if things are really
"getting better", then why in the world do we have more than a
million public school children without homes?
These days a lot of
families that have lost their homes have ended up living in
their vehicles. The following is an excerpt from

just violent criminals that get thrown into prison. If you lose

Commack resident John Mayer is
now pursuing legal action after Suffolk County Police visited
his home and threatened to embarrass him in front of his
neighbors before confiscating Mayer’s handguns and rifles,
firearms worth around $6,500 dollars.
Mayer also had his pistol license revoked and was told it would
only be restored when his son reaches 18 years of age and moves
out of the home.
The police visit stemmed from a
March 1 incident at Pines Elementary school in Hauppauge.
Mayer’s 10-year-old son discovered that some of his friends had
been bullied by other boys and there had been a scuffle on the
schoolyard. Mayer’s son discussed a plan with two other boys to
bring a water pistol, a paintball gun and a BB gun to the home
of the bullies involved in the incident.
Despite the fact that the boys
involved do not even own any of the guns mentioned, when the
school principle found out about the conversation he suspended
Mayer’s son for two days and filed a police report.
“What the school did was
atrocious,” Mayer’s lawyer, James Murtha
told the Hauppauge Patch. “He’s a good kid, who has been
discriminated against severely by the school district.”
A few days later, Mayer received
a call from the pistol licensing office informing him that his
pistol license had been revoked and that police would visit his
home to confiscate his weapons.
“I attempted to explain that this
must be a mistake, no wrong doing occurred on my part. My son
has no access to any of my guns. The officer that came to my
residence saw that all my guns were secured. Pistol Licensing
was not interested in my side of the story. They were only
interested in what happened with my 10-year-old son in school,”
According to Mayer, he was
harassed by police who also threatened to interrogate his
10-year-old son without Mayer’s permission.
Suffolk County Police and the
Hauppauge Public School District have refused to comment on the
matter besides releasing glib statements.
Mayer is now pressing charges
against both Suffolk County Police and Hauppauge School District
in federal court.
This is merely the latest of a
long list of incidents involving hysterical reactions to

while playing “cops and robbers” with each other.

their families,” says the professor of political science at

Kids belong to whole communities, she insists, and once we
realize this we’ll make “better investments” in government
indoctrination of children.
Melissa Harris-Perry is
regurgitating the Obama “you didn’t build that” meme. “If you’ve
got a business, you didn’t build that,” Obama said during a
campaign stop in Roanoke, Virginia. “Somebody else made that
happen,” it was not the result of individual initiative. “The
Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research
created the Internet so that all the companies could make money
off the Internet.”
“Like most people of his
ideological bent, Obama either cannot or will not distinguish
between society — which is created through peaceful
commerce and other forms of private cooperation — and the
state — an anti-social artifact built on conquest, coercion,
and confiscation of wealth,” writes
William Grigg. “Government produces nothing; it is an
exercise in pure consumption and, usually, the destruction of
capital. As Nietzsche famously said, everything the State has is
Stephan Kinsella argues that the primary social evil today
is a lack of respect for the fundamental right of
self-ownership. Obama and Harris-Perry represent the other side
of this argument. They believe, as do all Marxists and
socialists, that the state, what Harris-Perry calls the
“community,” owns the individual.
Harris-Perry urges us to “break
through” the “private idea” that individuals own themselves.
Like Marx, she believes the individual is a
“communal being” and all human worth is intractably linked
to the community, the collective, and the state is the ultimate
manifestation of the collective will.
Harris-Perry’s homage to the
state was part of a two-year long, multi-million dollar
advertising campaign by MSNBC. The network, created through
a merger between Microsoft and the death merchant General

Mikhail Gorbachev, characterized him). “We can go backward, or
we can keep moving forward,” he said during a speech at Carnegie
Mellon University. “And I don’t know about you, but I want to
It’s no mistake Obama’s handlers
and MSNBC adopted the slogan. The word “forward” has a special
meaning in socialist political terminology. It was frequently
used as a name for socialist and communist newspapers and
periodicals in the 20th century. “The slogan ‘Forward!’
reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that
their movements reflected the march of history, which would move
forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism,”
It seems incomprehensible that a
multinational corporation like MSNBC would embrace communism. In
fact, as Gary Allen noted, it is quite natural.
“If one understands that
socialism is not a share-the-wealth program, but is in reality a
method to consolidate and control the wealth, then the seeming
paradox of superrich men promoting socialism becomes no paradox
at all,” he wrote. “Instead it becomes the logical, even the
perfect tool of power-seeking megalomaniacs. Communism, or more
accurately, socialism, is not a movement of the downtrodden
masses, but of the economic elite.”

More Than 101
Million Working Age Americans Do Not Have A Job
By Michael, on April 7th, 2013
The jobs recovery is a
complete and total myth. The percentage of the working age
population in the United States that had a job in March 2013 was
exactly the same as it was all the way back in March 2010. In
addition, as you will see below, there are now more than 101
million working age Americans that do not have a job. But even
though the employment level in the United States has
consistently remained very low over the past three years, the
Obama administration keeps telling us that unemployment is
actually going down. In fact, they tell us that the unemployment
rate has declined from a peak of 10.0% all the way down to 7.6%.
And they tell us that in March the unemployment rate fell by
0.1% even though only 88,000 jobs were added to the U.S.
economy. But it takes at least 125,000 new jobs a month just to
keep up with population growth. So how in the world are they
coming up with these numbers? Well, the reality is that the
entire decline in the unemployment rate over the past three
years can be accounted for by the reduction in size of the labor
force. In other words, the Obama administration is getting
unemployment to go down by pretending that millions upon
millions of unemployed Americans simply do not want jobs
anymore. We saw this once again in March. According to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics,
more than 600,000 Americans dropped out of the labor
market during that month alone. That pushed the labor force
participation rate down to 63.3%, which is the lowest it has
been in more than 30 years. So please don't believe the hype.
The sad truth is that there has been no jobs recovery
If things were getting
better, there would not be more than 101 million working age
Americans without a job.
So exactly where does
that statistic come from? Well, the following explains where I
got that number...
According to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are
11,742,000 working age Americans that are officially
In addition, the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics says that there are
89,967,000 working age Americans that are "not in the
labor force". That is a new all-time record, and that number
increased by a whopping
663,000 during the month of March alone.
When you add 11,742,000
working age Americans that are officially unemployed to the
89,967,000 working age Americans that are "not in the labor
force", you come up with a grand total of 101,709,000 working
age Americans that do not have a job.
When you stop and think
about it, that is an absolutely staggering statistic.
And anyone that tells you
that "a higher percentage of Americans are working today" is
telling you a complete and total lie. During the last recession
the percentage of working age Americans with a job fell
dramatically, and since then we have not seen that number bounce
back at all. In fact, this is the very first time in the
post-World War II era that we have not seen the
employment-population ratio bounce back after a recession. At
this point, the employment-population ratio has been under 60
percent for 49 months in a row...
Since the end of 2009,
the employment-population ratio has been remarkably steady. Just
check out these numbers...
March 2008: 62.7 percent
March 2009: 59.9 percent
March 2010: 58.5 percent
March 2011: 58.4 percent
March 2012: 58.5 percent
March 2013: 58.5 percent
We should be thankful
that the percentage of working age Americans with a job did not
continue to decline, but we should also be quite alarmed that it
has not bounced back at all.
If there was going to be
a recovery, there would have been one by now. The next major
economic downturn is rapidly approaching, and that is going to
push the employment-population ratio down even farther.
But since the end of the
last recession, corporate profits have bounced back in a big way
and are now at
an all-time high. So you would figure that the big
corporations should be able to hire a lot more workers by now.
Unfortunately, that is
not the way things work anymore. Big corporations are trying to
minimize the number of expensive American workers that they have
on their payrolls as much as possible these days.
One way that they are
doing this is through the use of technology. Thanks to robots,
computers and other forms of technology, big corporations simply
do not need as many human workers as they used to. In future
years, this trend is only going to accelerate. I wrote about how
this is changing the world of employment in one of my previous
articles entitled "Rise
Of The Droids: Will Robots Eventually Steal All Of Our Jobs?"
Another way that big
corporations are replacing expensive American workers is by
shipping their jobs off to the other side of the globe. Big
corporations know that they can make bigger profits by making
stuff in foreign countries where they can pay workers less than
a dollar an hour with no benefits. How in the world are American
workers supposed to compete with that?
And of course
immigration is having a dramatic impact on the labor
market in some areas of the country as well. Cheap labor has
dramatically driven down wages in a lot of professions. For
example, once upon a time you could live a very nice middle
class lifestyle as a roofer. But now many roofers really
struggle to make a living.
When you add everything
up, it paints a very bleak picture for the future of the
The cost of living keeps
rising much faster than wages do, and the competition for good
jobs has become incredibly fierce.
Meanwhile, the government
continues to make things even easier for those that are not
working. This has caused some Americans to give up completely
and to be content with letting the government take care of them.
The following is from a recent article
by Monty Pelerin...
make it easier to get unemployment benefits for longer time
periods, more people take advantage of the system. So too with
food stamps and disability. All programs are at or near record
levels in what is supposed to be four years into an economic
recovery. For many, the benefits of becoming a government
dependent exceed what they can earn. One study reported that a
family of four, collecting all the benefits for which they were
entitled, would have to earn $65,000 per annum to have the same
after-tax purchasing power.
you are a product of the government schools and are legal to
work (i.e., have skills enough that you are affordable at the
minimum wage or higher), at what point do you realize that there
is no need to go through the hassle of actual work. You can live
pretty well by staying home and taking advantage of the
entitlements available to you. That is exactly what a larger and
larger percentage of the population are realizing. In many
cases, it is economically irrational to work.
behavior creates a social pathology that only worsens over time.
Kids learn from their parents that work is not necessary and the
many ways to game the system. In this regard, look for this
problem to become worse over time unless these programs are cut
In some areas of the
country, it actually pays not to work very hard. According to
Gary Alexander, the Secretary of Public Welfare for
the state of Pennsylvania, a "single mom is better off earnings
gross income of $29,000 with $57,327 in net income & benefits
than to earn gross income of $69,000 with net income and
benefits of $57,045."
But the truth is that
most Americans still want to work hard and would gladly take a
good job if they could just find one. The following is one
example that was featured in a recent
Fox News article...
a full year of fruitless job hunting, Natasha Baebler just gave
already abandoned hope of getting work in her field, working
with the disabled. But she couldn't land anything else, either —
not even a job interview at a telephone call center.

not proud of it," says Baebler, who is in her mid-30s and is
blind. "The only way I'm able to sustain any semblance of
self-preservation is to rely on government programs that I have
no desire to be on."
Most Americans want to
work hard and take care of themselves.
economy is not producing nearly enough jobs for everyone and it
never will again.
So there will continue to
be millions upon millions of Americans that find that they
cannot take care of themselves and their families without
government assistance no matter how hard they try.
And this is just the
beginning - things are going to get much worse during the
next major wave of the economic collapse.
Yes, at the moment there
are more than 101 million working age Americans that do not have
a job, but that number is actually going to go much higher in
the years ahead. The anger and frustration caused by a lack of
employment opportunities is going to shake this nation.
That is why it is
important to try to become less dependent on your own job. In
this economic environment, a job can disappear at literally any
moment. Anything that you can do to become less dependent on the
system would be a good thing.
Most don’t know that Martin

a Memphis jury’s verdict on December 8, 1999,
in the wrongful death lawsuit of the King family versus Loyd
Jowers “and other unknown co-conspirators,” Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. was assassinated by a conspiracy that included agencies
of his own government. Almost 32 years after King’s murder at
the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968, a court extended
the circle of responsibility for the assassination beyond the
late scapegoat James Earl Ray to the United States government.

I can hardly believe the fact that, apart from the courtroom
participants, only Memphis TV reporter Wendell Stacy and I
attended from beginning to end this historic three-and-one-half
week trial. Because of journalistic neglect scarcely anyone else
in this land of ours even knows what went on in it. After
critical testimony was given in the trial’s second week before
an almost empty gallery, Barbara Reis, U.S. correspondent for
the Lisbon daily Publico who was there several days,
turned to me and said, “Everything in the U.S. is the trial of
the century. O.J. Simpson’s trial was the trial of the century.
Clinton’s trial was the trial of the century. But this is
the trial of the century, and who’s here?”
What I experienced in that
courtroom ranged from inspiration at the courage of the Kings,
their lawyer-investigator William F. Pepper, and the witnesses,
to amazement at the
government’s carefully interwoven plot to kill Dr. King. The
seriousness with which U.S. intelligence agencies planned the
murder of Martin Luther King Jr. speaks eloquently of the threat
Kingian nonviolence represented to the powers that be in the
spring of 1968.
In the complaint filed by the
King family, “King versus Jowers and Other Unknown
Co-Conspirators,” the only named defendant, Loyd Jowers, was
never their primary concern. As soon became evident in court,
the real defendants were the anonymous co-conspirators who stood
in the shadows behind Jowers, the former owner of a Memphis bar
and grill. The Kings and Pepper
were in effect charging U.S. intelligence agencies –
particularly the FBI and Army intelligence – with organizing,
subcontracting, and covering up the assassination. Such a charge
guarantees almost insuperable obstacles to its being argued in a
court within the United States. Judicially it is an unwelcome

Many qualifiers have been
attached to the verdict in the King case. It came not in
criminal court but in civil court, where the standards of
evidence are much lower than in criminal court. (For example,
the plaintiffs used unsworn testimony made on audiotapes and
videotapes.) Furthermore, the King family as plaintiffs and
Jowers as defendant agreed ahead of time on much of the
But these observations are not
entirely to the point. Because of the government’s “sovereign
immunity,” it is not possible to put a U.S. intelligence agency
in the dock of a U.S. criminal court. Such a step would require
authorization by the federal government, which is not likely to
indict itself. Thanks to the conjunction of a civil court, an
independent judge with a sense of history, and a courageous
family and lawyer, a spiritual breakthrough to an unspeakable
truth occurred in Memphis. It allowed at least a few people (and
hopefully many more through them) to see the forces behind
King’s martyrdom and to feel the responsibility we all share for
it through our government. In
the end, twelve jurors, six black and six white, said to
everyone willing to hear: guilty as charged.
We can also thank the unlikely
figure of Loyd Jowers for providing a way into that truth.
Loyd Jowers: When the frail,
73-year-old Jowers became ill after three days in court, Judge
Swearengen excused him. Jowers did not testify and said through
his attorney, Lewis Garrison, that he would plead the Fifth
Amendment if subpoenaed. His discretion was too late. In 1993
against the advice of Garrison, Jowers had gone public.
Prompted by William Pepper’s
progress as James Earl Ray’s attorney in uncovering Jowers’s
role in the assassination, Jowers told his story to Sam
Donaldson on Prime Time Live. He said he had been asked
to help in the murder of King and was told there would be a
decoy (Ray) in the plot. He was also told that the police
“wouldn’t be there that night.”
In that interview, the transcript of which was read to the jury
in the Memphis courtroom, Jowers said the man who asked him to
help in the murder was a Mafia-connected produce dealer named
Frank Liberto. Liberto, now deceased,
had a courier deliver $100,000 for Jowers to hold at his
restaurant, Jim’s Grill, the back door of which opened onto
the dense bushes across from the Lorraine Motel. Jowers said he
was visited the day before the murder by a man named Raul, who
brought a rifle in a box.
Young, who witnessed the
assassination, can be heard on the tape identifying McCollough
as the man kneeling beside King’s body on the balcony in a
famous photograph. According to witness
Cobey Vernon Smith, McCollough
had infiltrated a Memphis community organizing group, the
Invaders, which was working with the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference. In his trial testimony Young said the MPD
intelligence agent was “the guy who ran up [the balcony stairs]
with us to see Martin.”
Jowers says on the tape that
right after the shot was fired
he received a smoking rifle at the rear door of Jim’s Grill from
Clark. He broke the rifle down into two pieces and wrapped
it in a tablecloth. Raul picked it up the next day. Jowers said
he didn’t actually see who fired the shot that killed King, but
thought it was Clark, the MPD’s best marksman.
Young testified that his
impression from the 1998 meeting was that the aging, ailing
to get right with God before he died, wanted to confess it and
be free of it.” Jowers denied, however, that he knew the
plot’s purpose was to kill King – a claim that seemed
implausible to Dexter King and Young. Jowers has continued to
fear jail, and he had directed Garrison to defend him on the
grounds that he didn’t know the target of the plot was King. But
his interview with Donaldson suggests he was not naïve on this
Loyd Jowers’s story opened the
door to testimony that explored the systemic nature of the
murder in seven other basic areas:
“I have no
doubt,” Lawson said, “that the government viewed all this
seriously enough to plan his assassination.”
Coretta Scott King testified that her husband had to return
to Memphis in early April 1968
because of a violent demonstration there for which he had been
blamed. Moments after King arrived in Memphis to join the
sanitation workers’ march there on March 28, 1968, the scene
turned violent – subverted by government provocateurs, Lawson
said. Thus King had to return to Memphis on April 3 and prepare
for a truly nonviolent march, Mrs. King said, to prove SCLC
could still carry out a nonviolent campaign in Washington.

explanation for his transfer Wallace answered, “No. Never did.
Not to this day.”

Ed Redditt, a black Memphis Police Department detective,
from his Fire Station 2 surveillance post two hours before
the Redditt incident, it is important to note that it was
Redditt himself who initiated his watch on Dr. King from the
firehouse across the street. Redditt testified that when King’s
party and the police accompanying them (including Detective
Redditt) arrived from the airport at the Lorraine Motel
on April 3, he “noticed something that was unusual.” When
Inspector Don Smith, who was in charge of security, told Redditt
he could leave, Redditt “noticed there was nobody else there. In
the past when we were assigned to Dr. King [when Redditt had
been part of a black security team for King], we stayed with
him. I saw nobody with him. So I went across the street and
asked the Fire Department could we come in and observe from the
rear, which we did.” Given Redditt’s concerns for King’s safety,
his particular watch on the Lorraine may not have fit into
interview after the trial, Redditt told me the story of how his
1978 testimony on this question before the House Select
Committee on Assassinations was part of a heavily pressured
cover-up. “It was a farce,” he said, “a total farce.”
been subpoenaed by the HSCA to testify, as he came to realize,
not so much on his strange removal from Fire Station 2 as the
fact that he had spoken about it openly to writers and
researchers. The HSCA focused narrowly on the discrepancy
between Redditt’s surveiling King (as he was doing) and acting
as security (an impression Redditt had given writers
interviewing him) in order to discredit the story of his
removal. Redditt was first grilled by the committee for eight
straight hours in a closed executive session. After a day of
hostile questioning, Redditt finally said late in the afternoon,
“I came here as a friend of the investigation, not as an enemy
of the investigation. You don’t want to deal with the truth.” He
told the committee angrily that if the secret purpose behind the
King conspiracy was, like the JFK conspiracy, “to protect the
country, just tell the American people! They’ll be happy! And

his public testimony the next day “was a set-up”: “The bottom
line on that one was that Senator Baker decided that I wouldn’t
go into this open hearing without an attorney. When the lawyer
and I arrived at the hearing, we were ushered right back out
across town to the executive director in charge of the
investigation. [We] looked through a book, to look at the
questions and answers.”
“So in essence
what they were saying was: ‘This is what you’re going to answer
to, and this is how you’re going to answer.’ It was all made up
– all designed, questions and answers, what to say and what not
to say. A total farce.”
Former MPD Captain Jerry Williams followed Redditt to the
witness stand. Williams had been responsible for forming a
special security unit of black officers whenever King came to
Memphis (the unit Redditt had served on earlier). Williams took
pride in providing the best possible protection for Dr. King,
which included, he said, advising him never to stay at the

Hatred and fear of King deepened, Lawson said, in response to
his plan to hold the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C.
King wanted to shut down the nation’s capital in the spring of
1968 through massive civil disobedience until the government
agreed to abolish poverty. King saw the Memphis sanitation
workers’ strike as the beginning of a nonviolent revolution that
would redistribute income. “I have no doubt,” Lawson said, “that
the government viewed all this seriously enough to plan his

he was adamantly opposed to moving King, as instructed, from an
inner court room behind the motel office (which had better
security) to an outside balcony room exposed to public view.
“If they had

Caldwell was a New York Times reporter in his
room at the Lorraine Motel the evening of April 4. In
videotaped testimony, Caldwell said
he heard what he thought was a bomb blast at 6:00 p.m.
When he ran to the door and looked out, he saw a man
crouched in the heavy part of the bushes across the street.
The man was looking over at the Lorraine’s balcony. Caldwell
wrote an article about the figure in the bushes but was
never questioned about what he had seen by any
authorities. In a 1993 affidavit from former SCLC official
James Orange that was read into the record, Orange said
that on April 4, “James Bevel and I were driven around by
Marrell McCollough, a person who at that time we knew to be
a member of the Invaders, a local community organizing
group, and who we subsequently learned was an undercover
agent for the Memphis Police Department and who now works
for the Central Intelligence Agency . . . [After the shot,
when Orange saw Dr. King’s leg dangling over the balcony], I
looked back and saw the smoke. It couldn’t have been more
than five to ten seconds.
The smoke came out of the brush area on the opposite side of
the street from the Lorraine Motel. I saw it rise up
from the bushes over there. From that day to this time I
have never had any doubt that the fatal shot, the bullet
which ended Dr. King’s life, was fired by a sniper concealed
in the brush area behind the derelict buildings.

that all of the bushes and brush on the hill were cut down and

Circuit Court Judge
Arthur Hanes Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama, had
been Ray’s attorney in 1968. (On the eve of his
trial, Ray replaced Hanes and his father, Arthur
Hanes Sr., by Percy Foreman, a decision
Ray told the Haneses one week later was the biggest
mistake of his life.) Hanes testified that in
the summer of 1968 he interviewed Guy Canipe, owner
of the Canipe Amusement Company. Canipe was a
witness to the dropping in his doorway of a bundle
that held a trove of James Earl Ray memorabilia,
including the rifle, unfired bullets, and a radio
with Ray’s prison identification number on it. This
dropped bundle, heaven (or otherwise) sent for the
State’s case against Ray, can be accepted as
credible evidence through a willing suspension of
disbelief. As Judge Hanes summarized the State’s
lone-assassin theory (with reference to an exhibit
depicting the scene), “James Earl Ray had fired the
shot from the bathroom on that second floor, come
down that hallway into his room and carefully packed
that box, tied it up, then had proceeded across the
walkway the length of the building to the back where
that stair from that door came up, had come down the
stairs out the door,
placed the Browning box containing the rifle and the
radio there in the Canipe entryway.” Then Ray
presumably got in his car seconds before the
police’s arrival, driving from downtown Memphis to
Atlanta unchallenged in his white Mustang.Concerning
his interview with the witness who was the
cornerstone of this theory, Judge Hanes told the
jury that Guy Canipe (now deceased) provided
“terrific evidence”: “He said that the package was
dropped in his doorway by a man headed south down
Main Street on foot,
and that this happened at about ten minutes
before the shot was fired[emphasis
added].”Hanes thought Canipe’s witnessing the
bundle-dropping ten minutes before the shot was very
credible for another reason. It so happened (as
confirmed by Philip Melanson’s research) that at
6:00 p.m. one of the MPD tactical units that had
been withdrawn earlier by Inspector Evans, TACT 10,
had returned briefly to the area with its 16
officers for a rest break at Fire Station 2. Thus,
as Hanes testified, with the firehouse brimming with
police, some already watching King across the
street, “when they saw Dr. King go down,
the fire house erupted like a beehive . . . In
addition to the time involved [in Ray’s presumed
odyssey from the bathroom to the car], it was
circumstantially almost impossible to believe that
somebody had been able to throw that [rifle] down
and leaave right in the face of that erupting fire
When I spoke
with Judge Hanes after the trial about the startling evidence he
had received from Canipe, he commented, “That’s what I’ve been
saying for 30 years.”
William Hamblintestified not about the rifle thrown
down in the Canipe doorway but rather the smoking rifle
Loyd Jowers said he received at his back door from Earl
Clark right after the shooting. Hamblin recounted a
story he was told many times by his friend James McCraw,
who had died.James
McCraw is already well-known to researchers as the
taxi driver who arrived at the rooming house to pick up
Charlie Stephens shortly before 6:00 p.m. on April 4. In

McCraw never revealed publicly what he knew of the rifle

And he couldn’t really tell the truth.”
One of the
most significant developments in the Memphis trial was the
emergence of the mysterious Raul through the testimony of a
series of witnesses. In a 1995 deposition by James Earl Ray that
was read to the jury,
Ray told of meeting Raul in Montreal in the summer of 1967,
three months after Ray had escaped from a Missouri prison.
According to Ray, Raul guided Ray’s movements, gave him money
for the Mustang car and the rifle, and used both to set him up
witnesses who identified the photo as Raul’s included: British
Sidney Carthew, who in a videotaped deposition from England
he had met Raul (who
offered to sell him guns) and a man he thinks was Ray (who
wanted to be smuggled onto his ship) in Montreal in the summer
of 1967; Glenda and
Roy Grabow, who recognized Raul as a gunrunner they knew in
Houston in the ‘60s and ‘70s and who told Glenda in a rage that
he had killed Martin Luther King;
Royce Wilburn, Glenda’s brother, who also knew Raul in
Houston; and British television producer
Jack Saltman, who had obtained the passport photo and showed
it to Ray in prison, who identified it as the photo of the
person who had guided him.
Pepper, working on independent investigations, located Raul in
1995. He was living quietly with his family in the northeastern
U.S. It was there in 1997 that journalist
Barbara Reis of the Lisbon Publico, working on a
story about Raul, spoke with a member of his family. Reis
testified that she had spoken in Portuguese to a woman in Raul’s
family who, after first denying any connection to Ray’s Raul,
said “they” had visited them. “Who?” Reis asked. “The
government,” said the woman. She said government agents had
visited them three times over a three-year period. The
government, she said, was watching over them and monitoring
their phone calls. The woman
took comfort and satisfaction in the fact that her family (so
she believed) was being protected by the government.
In his closing
argument Pepper said of Raul: “Now,
as I understand it, the defense had invited Raul to appear here.
He is outside this jurisdiction, so a subpoena would be futile.
But he was asked to appear here. In earlier proceedings there
were attempts to depose him, and he resisted them. So he has not
attempted to come forward at all and tell his side of the story
or to defend himself.”
J.D. Hill was shot to death. His wife was charged with
shooting Hill (in response to his drinking), but she was not
indicted. From the details of Hill’s death, Terrell thought the
story about Hill’s wife shooting him was a cover, and that
his friend had been assassinated. In an interview, Terrell
said the CIA’s heavy censorship of his book
Disposable Patriot (1992) included changing the
paragraph on J.D. Hill’s death, so that it read as if Terrell
thought Hill’s wife was responsible.
Fauntroy, Dr. King’s colleague and a 20-year member of
Congress, chaired the subcommittee of the 1976-78 House
Select Committee on Assassinations that investigated King’s
assassination. Fauntroy testified in Memphis that in the
course of the HSCA investigation “it
was apparent that we were dealing with very sophisticated
forces.” He discovered electronic bugs on his phone and
TV set. When Richard Sprague, HSCA’s first chief
investigator, said he would make available all CIA, FBI, and
military intelligence records,
he became a focus of controversy. Sprague was forced to
resign. His successor made no demands on U.S. intelligence
agencies. Such pressures contributed to the subcommittee’s
ending its investigation, as Fauntroy said, “without
having thoroughly investigated all of the evidence that was
apparent.” Its formal conclusion was that Ray
assassinated King, that he probably had help, and that the
government was not involved. When I interviewed Fauntroy in a
van on his way back to the Memphis Airport, I asked about
the implications of his statements in an April 4, 1997
Atlanta Constitution article. The article said Fauntroy
now believed “Ray did not fire the shot that killed King and
was part of a larger conspiracy that possibly involved
federal law enforcement agencies,” and added: “Fauntroy said
he kept silent about his suspicions because of fear for
himself and his family.”
me that when he left Congress in 1991 he had the opportunity to
read through his files on the King assassination, including raw
materials that he’d never seen before. Among them was
information from J. Edgar Hoover’s logs. There he learned that
in the three weeks before King’s murder the FBI chief held a
series of meetings with “persons involved with the CIA and
military intelligence in the Phoenix operation in Southeast
Asia.” Why? Fauntroy also discovered there had been Green Berets
and military intelligence agents in Memphis when King was
killed. “What were they doing there?” he asked.
had talked about his decision to write a book about what he’d
“uncovered since the assassination committee closed down,” he
was promptly investigated and charged by the Justice Department
with having violated his financial reports as a member of
Congress. His lawyer told him that he could not understand why
the Justice Department would bring up a charge on the
technicality of one misdated check. Fauntroy said he interpreted
the Justice Department’s action to mean: “Look, we’ll get you on
something if you continue this way. . . . I just thought: I’ll
tell them I won’t go and finish the book, because it’s surely
not worth it.”
conclusion of his trial testimony, Fauntroy also spoke about his
fear of an FBI attempt to kill James Earl Ray
when he escaped from Tennessee’s Brushy Mountain State
Penitentiary in June 1977. Congressman Fauntroy had heard
reports about an FBI SWAT team having been sent into the area
around the prison to shoot Ray and prevent his testifying at the
HSCA hearings. Fauntroy asked HSCA chair Louis Stokes to alert
Tennesssee Governor Ray Blanton to the danger to the HSCA’s star
witness and Blanton’s most famous prisoner. When Stokes did,
Blanton called off the FBI SWAT team, Ray was caught safely by
local authorities, and in Fauntroy’s words, “we all breathed a
sigh of relief.”
So it goes –
downhill. The above is Glankler’s high-water mark: He got two
out of the first ten (if one counts Charles and Peggy Hurley as
a yes). Pepper questioned Glankler about 25 key witnesses. The
jury was familiar with all of them from prior testimony in the
trial. Glankler could recall his office interviewing a total of
three. At the twenty-fifth-named witness, Earl Caldwell, Pepper
finally let Glankler go:
Q. Did you
ever interview a former New York Times journalist, a
New York Daily News correspondent named
Caldwell? Not that I recall.
Q. You never
interviewed him in the course of your investigation?
A. I just
don’t recall that name.
MR. PEPPER: I
have no further comments about this investigation – no further
questions for this investigator.
Pepper went a step
beyond saying government agencies were responsible for the
assassination. To whom in turn were those murderous agencies
responsible? Not so much to government officials per se, Pepper
asserted, as to the economic powerholders they represented who
stood in the even deeper shadows behind the FBI, Army
Intelligence, and their affiliates in covert action. By 1968,
Pepper told the jury, “And today it is much worse in my view” –
“the decision-making processes in the United States were the
representatives, the footsoldiers of the very economic interests
that were going to suffer as a result of these times of changes
[being activated by King].”
To say that U.S. government agencies killed Martin Luther King
on the verge of the Poor People’s Campaign is a way into the
deeper truth that the economic powers that be (which dictate the
policies of those agencies) killed him. In the Memphis prelude
to the Washington campaign, King posed a threat to those powers
of a non-violent revolutionary force. Just how determined they
were to stop him before he reached Washington was revealed in
the trial by the size and complexity of the plot to kill him.
The vision behind the

Memphis trial has opened wide a door to our assassination
politics. Anyone who walks through it is faced by an either/or:
to declare naked either the empire or oneself.
Dexter King, the plaintiffs’ final witness, said the trial
was about why his father had been killed: “From a
holistic side, in terms of the people, in terms of the masses,
yes, it has to be dealt with because it is not about who killed
Martin Luther King Jr., my father. It is not necessarily about
all of those details. It is about: Why was he killed?
Because if you answer the why, you will understand the same
things are still happening. Until we address that, we’re all
in trouble. Because if it could happen to him, if it can happen
to this family, it can happen to anybody.
“She reminded me. She said,
‘Dexter, your dad and I have lived through this once already.
You have to understand that when you take a stand against the
establishment, first, you will be attacked. There is an attempt
to discredit. Second, [an attempt] to try and
character-assassinate. And third, ultimately physical
termination or assassination.’
“The second aspect of his work
that also dealt with money that caused a great deal of
consternation in the circles of power in this land had to do
with his commitment to take a massive group of people to
Washington. . . . Now he began to talk about a redistribution of
wealth, in this the wealthiest country in the world.”
To say that U.S. government
agencies killed Martin Luther King on the verge of the Poor
People’s Campaign is a way into the deeper truth that the
economic powers that be (which dictate the policies of those
agencies) killed him. In the Memphis prelude to the Washington
campaign, King posed a threat to those powers of a non-violent
revolutionary force. Just how determined they were to stop him
before he reached Washington was revealed in the trial by the
size and complexity of the plot to kill him.
Dexter King testified to the
truth of his father’s death with transforming clarity:
“The issue becomes: What do we do
about this? Do we endorse a policy in this country, in this
life, that says if we don’t agree with someone, the only means
to deal with it is through elimination and termination? I think
my father taught us the opposite, that you can overcome without
The jury returned with a verdict
after two and one-half hours. Judge James E. Swearengen of
Shelby County Circuit Court, a gentle African-American man in
his last few days before retirement, read the verdict aloud. The
courtroom was now crowded with spectators, almost all black.
“In answer to the question, ‘Did
Loyd Jowers participate in a conspiracy to do harm to Dr. Martin
Luther King?’ your answer is ‘Yes.’” The man on my left leaned
forward and whispered softly, “Thank you, Jesus.”
The judge continued: “Do you also
find that others, including governmental agencies, were parties
to this conspiracy as alleged by the defendant?’ Your answer to
that one is also ‘Yes.’” An even more heartfelt whisper: “Thank

of democracy by corporate and military power. The powers that be

David Morphy, the only juror to
grant an interview, said later: “We can look back on it and say
that we did change history. But that’s not why we did it. It was
because there was an overwhelming amount of evidence and just
too many odd coincidences.
“Everything from the police
department being pulled back, to the death threat on Redditt, to
the two black firefighters being pulled off, to the military
people going up on top of the fire station, even to them going
back to that point and cutting down the trees. Who in their
right mind would go and destroy a crime scene like that the
morning after? It was just very, very odd.”

Olivia Catling’s security door, she was several minutes in

verdict, and she smiled. “So I can sleep now. For years I could
still hear that shot. After 31 years, my mind is at ease. So I
can sleep now, knowing that some kind of peace has been brought
to the King family. And that’s the best part about it.”
Perhaps the lesson of the King

nonviolence better than we do, or better than we want to. In the
spring of 1968, when Martin King was marching (and Robert

The faithful in a nonviolent
movement that hopes to change the distribution of wealth and
power in the U.S.A. – as Dr. King’s vision, if made real, would
have done in 1968 – should be willing to receive the same kind
of reward that King did in Memphis. As each of our religious
traditions has affirmed from the beginning, that recurring story
of martyrdom (“witness”) is one of ultimate transformation and
cosmic good news.

Harvard study says
Here’s one for you, they did nothing to
us! And yet, we’ve destroyed their countries and
simultaneously, our economy—52% of the annual US budget goes
into the pockets of the Elite Military Industrial Complex for
these wars. What have we gained, what have we accomplished?
We’ve accomplish nothing and we continue to administer only
pain, death and destruction.
That sounds familiar… “He comes only to
steal, kill and destroy. He was a liar from the beginning, the
father of lies, and he cannot tell the truth.”
Yet, Korea has threatened us numerous
times and we’ve done nothing. So what’s the difference? Korea
has no resources to enhance the coffers of the Elite. Now
Libya, that’s another story just like the other two... You see,
Afghanistan has poppies, and 90% of the opium comes from
Afghanistan—consider the ruined lives around the world because
of that. And Libya, well, they stole 600 tons of gold from
Kaddafi, took control of Libya’s oil fields and we’re now in the
process of destroying that country the same as we did
Afghanistan and Iraq. Now Libya was a prize worthy of the
Elite’s efforts—and all at the US taxpayers expense. You see,
they just reap the benefits and hand us the bill. Look out,
Syria and all of the Middle East, you’re on their list!
Speaking of oil, did you know that we
handed over all of the Iraqi oil rights to China? We owe China
big time; we’re in debt to China over a trillion dollars.
Barry Goldwater said, “Nothing in
politics happens by chance,” and I believe him.
Americans, you will reap the
consequences for these actions! Because you’ve rejected the
truth as the lairs told you they were conspiracy theories,
and by accepting the lie, you’ve allowed all of this to take
place. And the penalty is America’s demise. You are
accomplices to those evils you fail to oppose.
God would not be the righteous and just
God that He is, if He didn’t judge America, and Americans, for
their evil actions and the ones they failed to oppose.
Exclusions: All those who’ve
reverberated the truth to deaf and dumb ears. Unfortunately, we
will also reap what they sowed!

The U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will cost taxpayers $4
trillion to $6 trillion, taking into account the medical care of
wounded veterans and expensive repairs to a force depleted by
more than a decade of fighting, according to a new study by a
Washington increased military benefits in late 2001 as the
nation went to war, seeking to quickly bolster its talent pool
and expand its ranks. Those decisions and the protracted
nation-building efforts launched in both countries will generate
expenses for years to come, Linda J. Bilmes, a public policy
professor, wrote in the report that was released Thursday.
“As a consequence of these wartime spending
choices, the United States will face constraints in funding
investments in personnel and diplomacy, research and development
and new military initiatives,”
the report says. “The legacy of decisions taken during the
Iraq and Afghanistan wars will dominate future federal budgets
for decades to come.”
Bilmes said the United States has spent
almost $2 trillion already for the military campaigns in
Afghanistan and Iraq. Those costs, she said, are only a fraction
of the ultimate price tag. The biggest ongoing expense will be
providing medical care and disability benefits to veterans of
the two conflicts.
“Historically, the bill for these costs has
come due many decades later,” the report says, noting that the
peak disbursement of disability payments for America’s warriors
in the last century came decades after the conflicts ended.
“Payments to Vietnam and first Gulf War veterans are still
Spending borrowed money to pay for the wars
has also made them more expensive, the study noted. The
conflicts have added $2 trillion to America’s debt, representing
roughly 20 percent of the debt incurred between 2001 and 2012.
Bilmes’s estimate provides a higher range
another authoritative study on the same issue by Brown
University’s Eisenhower Research Project. Brown researchers put
the price tag at roughly $4 trillion.
Both figures are dramatically higher than
what U.S. officials projected they would spend when they were
planning to go to war in Iraq. Stephen Friedman, a senior White
House official, left government in 2002 after irking his
colleagues by publicly estimating that the Iraq war could end up
costing up to $200 billion.
It’s unclear how long Washington will keep
paying bills for that conflict, which dragged on for nearly a
decade and became deeply unpopular at home and in Iraq. Judging
from history, it could take quite awhile.
The Associated Press recently found that the federal
government is still cutting checks each month to relatives of
Civil War veterans nearly 150 years after the end of that war.

centuries the nation has lived in peace at home because of the
protections of our legitimate military and the many appropriate
state and federal law enforcement agencies, supported by
Constitutional courts. We stand today at a cross-road. Will we
allow this present Administration to overthrow our United States
Constitution and its legal processes to amend injustices, or,
will we honor our obligations to defend the Constitution against
a “domestic” enemy? Our Constitution lays out the proper methods
of resolving our differences; and it does not include its
overthrow by a rogue agency of a Marxist leadership at home.
You, sir, are our constitutionally elected agent to defend our
Constitution at home. We are counting upon you. We remain aware,
however, of this present threat and will not expose ourselves as
an easy prey to the authors of the destruction of our nation.
I know that this letter demands
much of you. We elected you because we, the citizens of the
State of Texas, believe that you are up to the task at hand and
will, against all threats, honor your oath and office. We are
also writing to your fellow members of the House and Senate to
stand in integrity with the Constitution and against this
present threat by the Obama administration and his DHS.
We refuse to surrender our
Constitution or our nation!

Vice President Biden and his entourage spent a little time in
London in early February
during his first foreign trip
of the second term of the Obama administration. A
document released today
revealed that the cost of lodging in London alone was close to
half a million dollars. The contract was awarded on January 30,
2013 to the Hyatt Regency London for a total of $459,388.65.
The total cost to taxpayers of Obama’s vacations to Hawaii
since becoming president is likely in excess of $20 million, and
possibly much, much more. During a time of budget deficits that
threaten the nation’s security and its future, the Obamas have
chosen to maintain a “family tradition” and vacation halfway
around the world instead of finding far cheaper alternatives
closer to home.
The $20 million figure is based on estimates of the cost of
the four Hawaii vacations the Obamas have taken during
Christmastime 2009-2012. According to a detailed breakdown
by the Hawaii Reporter, the annual excursions in 2009, 2010,
and 2011 cost about $4 million, much of it attributable to the
expense of taking Air Force One, at an hour rate of about
$180,000, on an eighteen-hour roundtrip journey to Honolulu and
The Presidential Ethics Committee for the Study of Bioethical
Issues has not taken the
testing of a potentially deadly
anthrax vaccine on children off the table, according to a
report released today.
On Jan. 10, 2012 Secretary Sebelius asked the Commission for
ethical advice on the development of medical countermeasures for
“The Bioethics Commission concluded that before ethical
pre-event pediatric AVA trials can be considered, further steps
must be taken, including additional minimal risk research with
adult participants, in order to determine whether the research
risks to children—who do not stand to benefit directly from
it—can be reduced to a level that poses no substantial risk to
their health or well-being,” stated the report titled, “Safeguarding
Children: Pediatric Medical Countermeasure Research.”
The report was in response to a 2012 letter from U.S Department
of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking
to review recommendations from the HHS’s National Biodefense
Science Board (NBSB) which advised to “gather safety and
immunogenicity data about AVA PEP in children prior to an
anthrax event, rather than during a future crisis when the
vaccine may be needed.”
“To address this issue, and the broader question of how best to
obtain clinical data on medical countermeasures in children,”
Sebelius’ letter, stated, “I ask you, as the Chair of the
Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, to
convene a panel to conduct a thorough review of the ethical
considerations of conducting clinical trials of medical
countermeasures in children.”
Speaking of the “common good” value of using children as guinea
pigs, commission chair of the presidential commission Amy
reportedly stated, “There is something to be gained
by going ahead with research on children. There is a common good
to be gained in being prepared.”
Dr. John Parker, a retired army major general and chairman of
the biodefense board, described to
Reuters how potential testing on children might go.

you’d go to 17-year-olds, then 16-year olds.” After each round

The controversial government proposal is coming under fire for
obvious reasons, not the least of which is
the questionable necessity of
developing a vaccine for an attack that may never occur.
The vaccine also carries a history of being blamed for the
deaths of soldiers.
The death of 22-year-old Rachel Lacy, an Army specialist, was
tied to the series of vaccines she received prior to deployment,
including the anthrax and smallpox vaccines. Lacy developed
pneumonia shortly after the innoculations and died at the Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, Minn in 2003.
“Minnesota coroner Eric Pfeifer told the paper the smallpox and
anthrax vaccines ‘may have’ contributed to her death,” reported
WND in August 2003, and seven months after the death,
a special team of medical and vaccine experts was assembled by
ruling her death a “possible” or “probable” result of

“At least two more soldiers deployed to Iraq died with fluid in
their lungs, according to their families; one of those was found
dead in his cot. The Pentagon has not released any information
on two more soldiers found dead in Iraq under similar
circumstances. In a fifth case, a 20-year-old died after what
the Pentagon said were “breathing difficulties” and his mother
has said she wants more information.”
The report goes on, “At least two more soldiers died after
experiencing chest pain, including the Aug. 27 death of
43-year-old Lt. Col Anthony L. Sherman, who competed in
triathlons and marathons. ‘The only thing they had to tell me
was severe myocardial infarction,’ said his wife, Lisa Ann, from
Pottstown, Pa. ‘In my heart of hearts, I believe there was more
to it than just a heart attack. He was in too good of shape.’”
In May 2003, four British soldiers sued the Ministry of Defense
following bouts of Gulf War Syndrome-like issues, experiencing
depression, breathing problems and eczema, which they say
stemmed from “vaccine overload.” The soldiers reportedly
received multiple jabs of the anthrax vaccine in one day before
falling ill. Rebecca Mowling of
The Evening Standard reported that, as a result,
45,000 British soldiers subsequently refused the vaccine.
In addition, the following
warning regarding the BioThrax vaccine, of which
there were $215.9 million in sales last year, appeared in a 2002
report on the FDA’s own website suggesting the vaccine “may be
linked with an increase in the number of birth defects” in a
retrospective study conducted on infants born to women in the
military who had received the vaccine.
Preliminary results of a recent unpublished retrospective study
of infants born to women in the U.S. military service worldwide
in 1998 and 1999 suggest that the vaccine may be linked with an
increase in the number of birth defects when given during
pregnancy (unpublished data, Department of Defense). Although
these data are unconfirmed, pregnant women should not be
vaccinated against anthrax unless the potential benefits of
vaccination have been determined to outweigh the potential risk
to the fetus.”
But surely the need for a vaccine to combat a threat that is
virtually non-existent and benefiting “the greater good” should
outweigh the risks involved in using unconsenting persons.
Reuters reports, “Under a 2005 law, children in an
anthrax-vaccine study would be prohibited from seeking damages
through the legal system.”
I feel obliged to
warn you in advance that unless you’re an evil demon who enjoys
the suffering of others, you’re going to have a VERY hard time

extremely disturbing, racist, murderous and downright evil.
Proceed at your own risk.
Here’s the story:
It’s time to start using American babies as guinea pigs to test
a bioweapons anthrax vaccine, concludes a presidential “ethics
panel.” (Yes, the word “ethics” is not a typo.) Presumably,
these will be black babies, as the history of
U.S. government medical experiments on American citizens seems
to always end up targeting blacks (see below).
The purpose of these
medical experiments on U.S. black babies is, of course, to get
FDA approval for a “pediatric anthrax vaccine.” Never mind the
fact that the risk of being exposed to anthrax is practically
zero. Is anybody dying from anthrax these days? Are children
coming home from school after “catching anthrax” from their
Anthrax is a
non-issue in America. No child needs an anthrax vaccine.
This is all one big push by the corrupt government working in
collusion with the criminal vaccine industry to use human babies
as guinea pigs so that the vaccine industry can sell tens of
millions of doses of this vaccine to the government under the
guise of “homeland security.”
While Big Pharma’s
medical scientists are no doubt drooling over the prospect of
getting a presidential thumbs up for using human babies as live
guinea pigs, not everybody is happy about this decision.
“[People] …say the children would be guinea pigs in a study that
would never help them and might harm them,” reports

you might even wonder why they want to use human babies for
these experiments instead of the usual primates (lab monkeys).
There’s a very disturbing answer to that question…
racism: “Poor black babies are cheaper than monkeys”
If the above
subhead doesn’t get you fuming mad, you’re not human. Back in
2006, we published a
timeline of medical experiments in the United States. Most
of the experiments were funded by the U.S. government and
carried out on poor people, minorities, prisoners and soldiers.
Soon after the publication of this article, I found myself
defending the article in a public internet forum, saying
something like “why can’t they use monkeys instead of humans?”
I’m not in favor of animal research either, but I’m even more
opposed to medical experiments on people.
The answer I got on
the forum was, “Poor black babies are cheaper than monkeys.” The
statement shocked me, but after I got over the shock of reading
that, it turns out that from the point of view of these criminal
medical researchers who conduct experiments on humans, it is
undeniably cheaper for them to acquire human babies than lab
monkeys. The lab monkeys cost tens of thousands of dollars each
and are expensive to keep and feed, but a human baby can
be picked up for free by any CPS worker, any day of the
week. Countless children are “taken” from poor families every
day in America, and they often “disappear” without a trace. Some
of them, I have long suspected, are used in secret medical
experiments. Once the research is done, the human babies can
simply be killed and disposed of.
If you find this
difficult to believe, you don’t know the real story of CPS and
child trafficking rings operating across America right now.
See this link at InfoWars.com for a recorded interview with
a former CPS worker who blew the whistle on child trafficking
and was later “suicided.”
Not all CPS workers
are criminal child traffickers, of course, but this kind of
activity does happen in numerous local CPS operations across the

Tuskegee syphilis experiments on black men? (See photo, right.)
Conducted over a span of 40 years, the Tuskegee experiment are
described as follows:
U.S. Public Health Service in Tuskegee, Ala. diagnoses 400 poor,
black sharecroppers with syphilis but never tells them of their
illness nor treats them; instead researchers use the men as
human guinea pigs to follow the symptoms and progression of the
disease. They all eventually die from syphilis and their
families are never told that they could have been treated. (See
full timeline of U.S. government medical experiments on humans.)

on poor black citizens if it means more money for rich, elite
pharmaceutical companies. You can also rest assured that an
“ethics panel” reviewed the Tuskegee experiments in 1931 and
gave it two thumbs up. “Proceed!”

There are, in increasingly frightening numbers, cells of angry men
in the United States preparing for combat with the U.S. government.
They are usually heavily

motivated by religious zeal.
They're not jihadists. They are

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has been tracking hate
groups for 30 years, released its
latest report on the
growth of these organizations this week. Its findings were, to
say the least, alarming. The center divides its subjects into
militias, which are mostly groups of weekend warriors who train
for combat against imaginary foes; hate groups, which target
minorities; and "patriot" groups, whose beef is with the U.S.
government. Patriot groups first began surfacing after the
massacre of a bizarre sect by federal agents in Waco, Texas, in
the early 1990s. They showed their teeth in 1995, when a patriot
adherent blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City.
Since then, the patriot movement has been growing at a
blistering pace, especially following the election of President
Obama in 2008, according
to the report. From just 149 groups in 2008, the number jumped
to 512 in 2009 and has been rising sharply since. In 2012, it
hit 1,360. Now that Obama is seriously pushing for tougher gun
laws, further growth is a near certainty. The result? There's no
knowing, but some kind of serious attack is increasingly
Patriot groups are motivated by a host of anti-government
attitudes, but their primary focus is guns. They are convinced
that the government is out to seize their weapons, even though
most legislation is focused on keeping guns out of the hands of
criminals or restricting the types of weapons that can be sold.
Many are also united by belief in an outlandish one-world

What can be done to reverse this tide of belligerent ignorance?
Not much. The typical patriot acts within his free-speech and
2nd Amendment rights, and in fact most patriot activity consists
of venting steam by meeting with like-minded Neanderthals and
firing off blog posts threatening civil war. Yet such blather
tends to get under the skin of the Timothy McVeighs of the
world. These groups should be closely monitored, with resources
adequate to the task, even if it means shifting some homeland
security money from the hunt for foreign terrorists.
The establishment media wasted little time after the Southern
Poverty Law Center sent a letter to the Justice Department and
the Department of Homeland Security demanding the mailed fist of
the state crack down on Americans expressing opposition to an
increasingly tyrannical federal government.
“There are, in increasingly frightening numbers, cells of angry

Despite the ethnic diversity of the patriot movement, the LA

white people. This feeds into the SPLC’s absurdist propaganda
arguing folks actively resisting constitutional violations
perpetuated by the federal government – from the trashing the
Second Amendment to the Fourth and beyond – are intimately
linked to a minuscule and entirely marginalized white
supremacist movement. By raising a fantasy specter of Klansman
armed with AR-15s gunning for black and Latino people, the SPLC
and the establishment media are actively colluding in an attempt
to demonize and eventually destroy an increasingly effective
we noted in our response to the SPLC letter, posted on the
same day the LA Times op-ed piece appeared, it is “hardly
surprising the SPLC has decided to exploit the growing and
diverse movement opposed to a raft of recently proposed
unconstitutional firearms laws and label the movement extremist
and akin to domestic terrorism.”
Nothing petrifies urban liberals more than defenders of the
Second Amendment, especially when they demonstrate with
brandished firearms. “Patriot groups are motivated by a host of
anti-government attitudes, but their primary focus is guns,” the
Times argues. “They are convinced that the government is out to
seize their weapons, even though most legislation is focused on
keeping guns out of the hands of criminals or restricting the
types of weapons that can be sold.”
The LA Times sheepishly decries the fact government is unable to
do much “to reverse this tide of belligerent ignorance” on the
part of “like-minded Neanderthals” who shelter and encourage
“the Timothy McVeighs of the world.”
Instead of a direct police state crack down and mass internment
of white people in concentration camps, the editorial staff of
the Los Angeles Times suggests a new COINTELPRO-like program
designed to monitor Americans upset by continual government
usurpations and attacks on the libertarian principles enshrined
in the Constitution.
Left unmentioned here is the obvious fact the real enemy of
government all along has not been a largely fantastical al-Qaeda
and a comical Saudi hooked up to a dialysis machine in an Afghan
cave, but a considerable and growing domestic patriot movement
determined to prevent the incremental move toward
authoritarianism and tyranny.
we pointed out the government’s attempt to reconstitute its
elaborately fashioned Arab and Islamic terror meme into a “white
al-Qaeda” threat. “Prior to the events in Norway [Anders
Breivik's murderous terror attacks], the Department of Homeland
released a propaganda video characterizing white middle
class Americans as terrorists and members of white al-Qaeda, a
term designed to conflate the image of the CIA-created Islamic
terror group and ‘rightwing extremists’ in America,” we wrote.
The overriding absurdity of the LA Times editorial is the
obvious fact that it is not merely white people who are
determined to restore America’s constitutional heritage.
It is people of all ethnic persuasions.

“If we are going to wet our proverbial pants over 0.3% in annual

reacted to Palin’s remarks by claiming she had regurgitated
a debunked “conspiracy theory.” However, despite admitting that
the DHS had purchased huge quantities of bullets, the source for
the “debunking” was a single quote by a DHS official downplaying
the whole issue.
A February 14
Associated Press report which featured the quote and an
explanation that the bullets were bought in bulk to save money
and were merely for training purposes only has been widely
derided as inaccurate.
As former Marine Richard Mason
told reporters with WHPTV News in Pennsylvania last week,
hollow point bullets (which make up the majority of the DHS
purchases) are not used for training because they are more
expensive than standard firing range rounds.
“We never trained with hollow points, we didn’t even see hollow
points my entire four and a half years in the Marine Corps,”
Despite concerns about why the DHS is buying such huge

preparing for civil unrest (the federal agency
purchased “riot gear” for that very purpose just before the

In yet another stunning victory for the alternative media (InfoWars,
Drudge Report, Natural News, WND, etc.), the story of the U.S.
government stockpiling huge quantities of ammunition (1.6
billion rounds and counting) has finally broken through media
censorship and gone mainstream.
Remember, until this piece was published, the entire leftist
media (NPR, MSNBC, CNN and countless leftist websites) all
pretended these 1.6 billion bullets were imaginary and
didn’t exist. It was all a grand “conspiracy theory,” we were
told, and anyone who reported the truth on the government’s ammo
purchases was labeled a fringe lunatic.
Why is the federal government arming up domestically?
The hardware build-up has been called a “domestic arms race,”
and it’s starting to make even mainstream media journalists
nervous. Benko writes that the 1.6 billion rounds of ammo being
purchased by DHS represents “…a stockpile that would last DHS
over a century. To claim that it’s to “get a low price” for a
ridiculously wasteful amount is an argument that could only fool
a career civil servant.”
He also points out that this huge
arms race of weapons, ammo and armored vehicles by the
federal government is taking place right in the middle of the
claimed “sequester” which the government claims has sharply
curtailed its ability to spend money. So while Janet Napolitano
threatens to release criminals onto the streets of America,
behind the scenes the government is actually building up an ammo
stockpile so huge that it could wage a 20-year war
against the American people.
World Net Daily has
also covered the story, saying, “the federal government’s
extraordinary buildup of ammunition looks even more ominous than
critics already have portrayed it.”
It’s time that government-worshipping leftists stopped behaving
as if they were delusional children in a make-believe fairy land
and started facing reality. It’s time we all asked the question
loudly and repeatedly: Why is the federal
government arming up against the American people? Who
gave the order and what is the purpose of it all?
And at what point do Alex Jones, Sarah Palin, Joseph Farah and
others get their long-deserved apology for accurately and
courageously warning the public about all this, even in the face
of being labeled lunatics for telling the truth?
Finally, what has become of journalism in America when people
who ask real questions are attacked and marginalized while those
who parrot government lies are looked upon as “authoritative”

TSA Allowed People with Criminal Records to Get Airport Security
The federal government has entrusted the security of the
nation’s airports to the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA). Yet according to a recent
report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of
Inspector General (OIG), the agency’s bungling of an airport
security badge vetting program allowed at least 11 individuals
with criminal backgrounds to obtain access to secured airport
areas. What’s more, says the OIG, because of the TSA’s lack of
oversight, some individuals with criminal records may retain
such access to this day.
According to the OIG, the TSA initially selected a single
vendor, the American Association of Airport Executives’ (AAAE)
Transportation Security Clearinghouse, to relay background check
information to the TSA, which then submits the data for a
Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment.
Only individuals who pass both screenings are to be given badges
granting them unescorted access to secured airport areas.
Responding to requests from airports, the TSA created the
Aviation Channeling Services Provider (ASCP) program in 2010 to
offer them a choice of vendors for the badge vetting process.
The next year it selected three vendors to participate in the
program: AAAE, Telos ID, and L1 Identity Solutions (now
MorphoTrust Enrollment Solutions).
This being a government project, it comes as no surprise that
the OIG found that the TSA “did not properly plan, manage, and
implement” it. In fact, the “project is still not completely
implemented and continues to face challenges to accomplish its
mission.” As of July 1, 2012, only a single airport had switched
vendors (from AAAE to Telos ID), and MorphoTrust Enrollment
Solutions was just beginning the testing phase of the project.
From the beginning, the project was doomed. “TSA did not have a
written comprehensive plan for the ASCP project design and
implementation,” noted the report. The agency has very little
documentation on the project at all, and none about who made or
approved project decisions. The project team supposedly made
decisions, but no one can prove what they were because “TSA did
not maintain team meeting minutes but relied on agendas as
evidence of actions assigned to each responsible member of the
The TSA also has no idea how much the project has cost thus far.
Writes the OIG, “TSA did not track and report all project costs
related to implementing the ASCP project.” As a result, it
cannot say whether more than three vendors could have been
acquired, and it “cannot be sure that it has not incurred
unplanned additional costs.”
“TSA did not establish standard testing requirements,” says the
report, “nor did the agency require that all vendors test system
functionality with at least one airport.” When the time came for
testing, the TSA was ready, but none of its vendors was; one had
not completed testing nearly a year later. “Since TSA did not
establish testing timeframe requirements, the agency could not
hold the vendors accountable for delaying the ASCP project
All of this ensured that the deployment of the project would be
fraught with difficulties. Sure enough, when ASCP was finally
deployed in April 2012, “airports began to experience
significant problems with the new … system,” according to the
OIG. “Airport operations were hindered because of aviation
workers’ inability to access secured areas without proper badge
At this point the TSA, in its wisdom, decided that if airports
couldn’t operate without security badges and the badges were
being held up because background checks were delayed, the
solution was not to fix the problems with the project (or even
to revert to the old system) but simply to allow airports to
issue badges without background checks. Thus, from April 20 to
June 1, 2012, airports could issue badges to those whose
background checks were in limbo, with the proviso that these
badges would be revoked if the checks were not completed within
Predictably, “TSA did not track which airports used the
alternate measures and the number of badges that were issued
under those measures,” the report observes. Only after the OIG
inquired about these important data did the TSA even bother to
look into the matter, and then it merely initiated a survey in
which airports were asked to self-report on the matter.
Of the 446 airports in the country, 290 responded to the survey;
and of those, 168 said that they had adopted the alternate
measures. “Five of the airports identified a total of 11
individuals with criminal backgrounds, who received badges
during the alternate measures period and would not have received
badges if they had been properly vetted. Five of those
individuals held their badge for more than 14 days, and
therefore those airports were not in compliance with the
alternate measure.” The TSA has absolutely no knowledge of how
many people with criminal backgrounds may have received security
badges at the remaining 156 airports, nor does it know how many
may still have them. Moreover, even the airports that responded
to the survey had an incentive to make themselves look good, so
it is possible that they underreported the number of shady
characters who obtained or still possess badges. “Therefore,”
declares the OIG, “individuals with criminal records may
currently have access to secured areas in our Nation’s
The report goes on to offer recommendations for improving future
projects. These are the sorts of commonsense things any private
company or organization would naturally do, such as developing a
“lessons learned report” from ASCP so that they don’t repeat
their mistakes, documenting every step of a project, and holding
vendors accountable for meeting their objectives. The TSA
concurred with these recommendations, but who really believes
the agency will implement them? It simply has no incentive to do
so given that it is in no danger of going under no matter how
horribly its projects are mismanaged. As Ronald Reagan memorably
quipped, “A government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal
life we’ll ever see on this earth.”
The OIG also recommended that the TSA “conduct a comprehensive
review of badges issued” without background checks, which the
TSA also agreed to do. But if that review is managed in a
similar fashion as the project itself — and there is little
reason to expect otherwise — it is likely to take years and
still not end up with a full accounting of individuals with
criminal records who possess security badges.
Anyone who thinks the TSA makes flying safer just isn’t paying
It is perhaps America’s most unsafe airport. Despite being the
launching point for one of the planes hijacked on 9/11 — Flight
93, which crashed in Pennsylvania — Newark Airport has had
numerous security violations since. The latest: a fake bomb that
made it past Transportation Security Administration officers.
Here, a Newark TSA screener who recently left the agency tells
how silly policies and lazy workers do little to stop real
A LOT of what we do is make-believe.
I’ve had to screen small children and explain to their parents I
had no choice but to “check” them. I would only place my hands
on their arms and bottom half of their legs, and the entire
“pat-down” lasted 10 seconds. This goes completely against TSA
Because the cameras are recording our every move, we have to do
something. If someone isn’t checked or even screened properly,
the entire terminal would shut down, as this constitutes a
But since most TSA supervisors are too daft to actually
supervise, bending the rules is easy to do.
Did you know you don’t need a high-school diploma or GED to work
as a security screener? These are the same screeners that TSA
chief John Pistole and Homeland Security Secretary Janet
Napolitano refer to as a first-class first line of defense in
the war on terror.
These are the employees who could never keep a job in the
private sector. I wouldn’t trust them to walk my dog.
An agent got through Newark last week with an improvised
explosive device? That’s not even news to anyone who works
there. It happens all the time. The failure rate is pretty high,
especially with federal investigators, and the pat-down itself
is ridiculous. As invasive as it is, you still can’t find
anything using the back of your hand on certain areas.
When there are internal tests, conducted by the Newark training
department, it’s easy to cheat because they use our co-workers.
You could be working with someone all morning, and then they’re
gone. Word gets around the checkpoint. Someone will come over to
you and say, “Hey, it’s Joe. He’s got a blue duffel bag.”
What are the chances of you being on a flight where something
happens? We always said it’s not a question of if terrorists get
through — it’s a question of when. Our feeling is nothing’s
happened because they haven’t wanted it to happen. We’re not any
big deterrent. It’s all for show.
A real pat-down is when a police officer pulls you over, uses
his hands to search, actually goes into your clothes. We have to
use the back of our hands around certain areas. It just doesn’t
work. It’s a really bad way to pat somebody down.
If I had to guess, I’m sure lots of things get through. One
screener told me about something he did going through security
when he went on vacation. Let’s just say the screeners did not
catch something that was really obvious to anyone who was paying
Most TSA screeners know their job is a complete joke. Their goal
is to use this as a stepping stone to another government agency.
We work in a culture where common sense has no place. All but a
very few TSA personnel know they’re employed by a
Our first question to anyone in a wheelchair is to ask if
they’re able to stand for a pat-down. If someone is in a
wheelchair, he likely can’t stand. Even when they’re sitting,
we’re required to ask them to move so we can check under their
All I needed was for a passenger to fall over because I asked
them to stand. And if that did happen, the screener would be
vilified and the official p.r. spin would be that he needed
Every time you read about a TSA horror story, it’s usually about
a screener doing what he or she is instructed to do.
Supervisors play absolutely no role in day-to-day functions
except to tell you not to chew gum. Gum chewing is a huge issue
with management. I once saw a supervisor make an officer open
his mouth to prove he had a mint and not a piece of gum.
Goofing off and half-hour-long bathroom breaks are the only way
to break up the monotony. There is also a lot of ogling of
female passengers by the male screeners. So, ladies, cover up
when you get to the airport. These guys are checking you out
A small number of screeners are delusional zealots who believe
they’re keeping America safe by taking your snow globe, your
2-inch pocket knife, your 4-ounce bottle of shampoo and
performing invasive pat-downs on your kids.
(Incidentally, the flap over the new rule allowing small
pocketknives is overblown. Most of the public doesn’t realize
it, but you are already allowed to bring scissors, screwdrivers,
tweezers, knitting needles and any number of sharp instruments
The rest are only there for the paycheck and generous benefits.
Screeners start at $15 per hour, and there is tons of overtime —
mainly because they are filling in for the many screeners who
don’t bother coming to work. For every 40 hours you work, you
receive four hours of vacation and four hours of sick time.
One screener didn’t come to work for four weeks. When he finally
reappeared, he asked for another week off. The answer was no. So
what did this brainiac decide to do? He took another week off —
and didn’t get terminated.
People have been caught falling asleep on the job. They get
written up, it’s put in their file, and that’s it.
New hires see how bad it is working there, and, believe it or
not, TSA does manage to hire some pretty decent people. They
just don’t last because they can get a normal job.
It’s the people who’ve been there a good number of years who
could never find employment elsewhere. When you have a real job,
it usually means you have to actually work and think, which a
lot of them have a hard time doing.
Anyone boarding an aircraft should feel maybe only a teeny tiny
bit safer than if there were no TSA at all.
